Chapter 2: The reed room
Jane is very upset. Bessie and Miss Abbot take her to the red-room. Jane cries and tries to fight them. She does not want to go. The women say Jane is like a "mad cat."
They tell her to sit on a stool and be quiet. If she moves, they will tie her. Jane says she will not move. The women say she is lucky to live in the house. They say if she is not good, she will go to the poorhouse.
Before they leave, Miss Abbot says something bad will come from the chimney if Jane is not sorry. Then they lock the door.
Jane is alone in the red-room. The room is big, cold, and red. It is very scary. Her uncle died in this room. Now no one sleeps there.
Jane sees her face in the mirror. She looks like a ghost. She feels cold, sad, and very alone. Not only that, but she thinks her aunt and cousins are unfair and mean. Not only that, but she remembers her uncle wanted Mrs. Reed to care for her, but she does not.
Then, Jane sees a light on the wall. She thinks it is a ghost. She screams. The servants come back. Jane says she saw a ghost. Mrs. Reed gets angry and says Jane must stay longer in the red-room. Jane cries and faints.
PERSONAL OPINION:
I think this part is very sad. Jane is only a child, but nobody listens to her. They punish her too much. The red-room is a very scary place. I feel sorry for Jane. She wants love and care, but she gets fear and pain. I think Jane is strong and brave. I hope her life gets better.
